About the Title:
Stringed instruments are strung in courses. These courses can have a single string or they can have multiple strings. As long as those strings are designed to be played at the same time they are part of the same course. Thus both 6 and 12 string guitars have 6 courses. A violin usually has four single string courses and a mandolin usually has 4 double string courses.
A fifth course on a mandolin creates new possibilities and takes the mandolin beyond traditional roles. That departure from tradition is what I am most interested in.
